Carlos Pinheiro Neto, MD, PhD, a leading expert in endoscopic skull base surgery, has joined NYU Langone Health as vice chair of the Department of Otolaryngology—Head & Neck Surgery. Alongside this role, Dr. Pinheiro Neto will serve as a professor in the department. Known for his expertise in minimally invasive techniques, Dr. Pinheiro Neto's work focuses on transforming the treatment of complex skull base tumors, which aids in improving patient outcomes and shortening recovery times.

He has been a pioneer in innovations related to skull base surgery, especially in endoscopic approaches. His techniques allow surgeons to remove tumors through natural corridors, such as the nostrils, avoiding large facial incisions or craniotomies. His work in reconstructive techniques has notably reduced complications like cerebrospinal fluid leaks, which can necessitate corrective surgeries. Furthermore, his research utilizes artificial intelligence for imaging evaluations to better identify suitable surgical candidates.

“Dr. Pinheiro Neto’s expertise in endoscopic skull base surgery aligns perfectly with NYU Langone’s mission of delivering world-class, patient-centered care,” said Umamaheswar Duvvuri, MD, PhD, the department chair and the Mendik Foundation Professor of Otolaryngology. “His technical skill, combined with his dedication to research and innovation, will further elevate our department’s capabilities and advance the field of minimally invasive tumor surgery.”

In his new role at NYU Langone, Dr. Pinheiro Neto will collaborate with faculty and fellows in the anatomy lab to foster innovations in head and neck surgery. He prioritizes refining nasal septal flap techniques, preserving patients' sense of smell during nasal cavity tumor removal, and collaborating with the institution’s AI team to develop patient triage systems that optimize surgical workflows.

“Joining NYU Langone Health is an incredible opportunity to collaborate with world-renowned experts across many specialties and to contribute to the institution’s continued leadership in complex surgical care,” stated Dr. Pinheiro Neto. “I look forward to advancing research, refining surgical techniques, and enhancing patient outcomes through ongoing innovation.”

Previously, Dr. Pinheiro Neto served at the Mayo Clinic as a professor of otolaryngology—head and neck surgery and fellowship director of skull base surgery and rhinology. He has a distinguished academic career, having authored a textbook and numerous peer-reviewed publications and often lectures on advanced surgical techniques.
