The New York Times has addressed a prevalent issue among U.S. adults: back pain. A study reviewing hundreds of trials shows that while many people experience this problem, effective treatments remain scarce.

A significant insight comes from Dr. Gbolabo Sokunbi, a spine surgeon affiliated with HSS. Dr. Sokunbi emphasizes the importance of proper body mechanics to prevent back strain and injury. "When lifting an object, make sure both feet are planted and your weight is evenly distributed," he says. He also advises lifting with the legs rather than the arms or back, and keeping heavier items close to the body to reduce spinal strain.

Furthermore, Dr. Sokunbi highlights the risks associated with lifting heavy objects, stating, "I’m in my mid 40s, and I no longer help family members move furniture."
