Five faculty members from Columbia University have been honored as fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) for their significant contributions to various scientific fields. The faculty members include Uttiya Basu from the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, known for his "distinguished contributions to molecular immunology." Basu's research delves into immune cell development and its implications on diseases like B cell lymphomas.
Sabrina Diano, renowned in neuroscience and metabolism, received recognition for her work on "how the neuronal-non-neuronal informational exchange in the mammalian brain senses fuel availability and nutrients."
Jean Gautier, also from the Vagelos College, was honored for his insights into "the molecular mechanisms used to sustain cell proliferation and to maintain genome integrity."
Robert Klitzman of the psychiatry department was recognized for "groundbreaking research on ethical, legal, and social challenges in medicine," as well as his contributions to policies and public understanding.
From the Mailman School of Public Health, Kiros Berhane was named a fellow for his "distinguished contributions to the field of environmental biostatistics," particularly concerning air pollution and health.
