Albert Einstein College of Medicine celebrated a significant milestone as its fourth-year medical students learned where they will begin their residency training. More than 150 students, accompanied by friends and family, gathered in Robbins Auditorium for the annual Match Day event.
Yaron Tomer, M.D., Dean at Einstein and chief academic officer at Montefiore Einstein, addressed the students: “You stand on the brink of residency, a unique opportunity to grow as clinicians and make profound contributions to healthcare.” He emphasized that each match represents not only a position but also aspirations and commitments to patient care.
Yoon Kang, M.D., vice dean for education at Einstein, added: “Medicine is a lifelong learning process. It is both an art and a science and requires continuous growth.”
This year's theme was "Dreams Are Unlimited," with each student receiving their match information in envelopes personalized with childhood photos. Just before noon, students opened their envelopes simultaneously after a countdown and noontime gong.
Bailey Frohlich expressed her excitement about matching to Yale New Haven Hospital in internal medicine while holding her daughter: “I know I’m going to be more prepared than I could have dreamed of.”
The largest group from the Class of 2025 matched into internal medicine with 46 students. Anesthesiology saw a significant increase with 21 matches. Other popular specialties included surgery (13), pediatrics (13), obstetrics & gynecology (12), psychiatry (11), dermatology (10), diagnostic radiology (8), emergency medicine (8), and ophthalmology (6). Thirty-four graduates will join Einstein-affiliated programs, including 31 at Montefiore.
Speakers at the event included Philip Ozuah, M.D., Ph.D., president and CEO of Montefiore Einstein; Allison B. Ludwig, M.D., associate dean for student affairs; and alumni speaker Assumpta Madu, M.D.
Behram Khan expressed gratitude for matching in ophthalmology at Montefiore: “It’s so exciting because now I get to stay with my family.” Stacey Franco shared her meaningful match to pediatrics at NYP-Columbia where she was treated as a child: “It feels so amazing... it feels so full circle.”
The National Resident Matching Program uses an algorithm to align applicants' preferences with those of U.S. residency programs. Residency training begins approximately seven weeks after the May 21 commencement ceremony.
