Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso has announced the establishment of a $50,000 fund to support community-led baby showers for new and expecting parents in Brooklyn. Nonprofits can apply for up to $5,000 in matching funds for these events, which must occur before May 2025.

The initiative is part of Reynoso's ongoing efforts to address maternal health disparities, particularly among Black women who are disproportionately affected by pregnancy-related complications. "No Brooklynite should have to experience the joys and anxieties of pregnancy and parenthood alone," said Reynoso. He emphasized the importance of community support in addressing gaps left by historical disinvestment in certain neighborhoods.

In April 2024, Reynoso hosted a 'Brooklyn Community Baby Shower' for 100 mothers at NYCHA’s Van Dyke Community Center. The event featured games, arts & crafts, giveaways, and information on pregnancy care. This event was part of Reynoso's broader maternal health agenda, which includes significant investments in public hospitals and educational campaigns.

Reynoso highlighted the alarming disparity faced by Black women regarding pregnancy-related complications: "Black women in New York City are about eight times more likely to die of pregnancy-related complications than their White counterparts." He reiterated his commitment to making Brooklyn a safer place for childbirth.

Applicants interested in the Community Baby Shower Fund will be prioritized if they plan events in neighborhoods with high maternal mortality rates. A guide on hosting these showers is available from Reynoso's office.

Since taking office, Reynoso has launched several initiatives focused on improving maternal health outcomes. These include forming a Maternal Health Task Force, allocating $45 million for hospital improvements, distributing 'Born in Brooklyn' baby boxes, and launching a public education campaign.

In addition to these efforts, over $1 million was allocated to renovate Brookdale Hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), underscoring Reynoso's dedication to enhancing healthcare services for underserved communities.
