In winter 2025, The Met Cloisters hosted an educational program for third-grade students from P.S. 48 PO Michael J. Buczek in upper Manhattan. The initiative aimed to explore the world of medieval art, focusing on both real and imaginary animals depicted in these historical pieces.
During their visits, students observed various mythical creatures such as a griffin over a stone doorway, a dragon with a coiled tail painted on a wall, and a unicorn woven into tapestries. Through careful observation and sketching, they learned about the unique characteristics of these medieval creatures and the materials used to create them.
Back in their classroom, the students embarked on creating their own hybrid creatures using new materials. They drew inspiration from both real and mythical animals to form beasts that embodied qualities ranging from fierce to gentle. Their artworks are now displayed at The Met Cloisters.
The program received support from P.S. 48 art teacher Félix Portela, Met teaching artist Pamela Lawton, and the entire P.S. 48 community.
