Nydia Velázquez, a longstanding U.S. Congress member representing New York’s 7th District since 1993, has recently shared her views on several pressing issues via social media. Born in Yabucoa, Puerto Rico, and residing in Brooklyn, Velázquez continues to address topics concerning reproductive rights, citizenship laws, and disaster relief efforts.
On January 22, 2025, Velázquez marked the anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade decision by reflecting on the current state of reproductive rights in America. She stated: "On the anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade decision, we remember what we’ve lost and what we’re fighting for." She emphasized that millions are facing stringent abortion bans but expressed determination to continue advocating for reproductive freedom and bodily autonomy.
In another post dated January 24, 2025, Velázquez addressed issues related to citizenship laws in America. She declared: "Being born in America makes you an American. Period." She criticized House Republicans and former President Trump for their stance on citizenship as unconstitutional and cited a Reagan-appointed judge's confirmation of this viewpoint. Velázquez urged vigilance against such attacks on constitutional rights.
Later that day on January 24, 2025, Velázquez turned her attention to disaster relief efforts for Puerto Rican fishermen affected by Hurricane María nearly eight years ago. She revealed delays in aid distribution through her correspondence with @CommerceOIG: "Nearly 8 yrs after Hurricane María, Puerto Rican fishermen are still waiting for disaster relief." With $11.4 million in aid yet to be distributed and most funds expiring soon in 2025, she called for immediate federal action to ensure timely delivery of this assistance.
