On January 20, City and State New York recognized Dr. Yonit Lax for her contributions to pediatric healthcare. Dr. Lax, who serves as Chief of Pediatric Community Health at Maimonides Health, was acknowledged for her innovative approach to treating children by addressing their social, emotional, and developmental needs.
Dr. Lax has been instrumental in creating programs like the Maimonides Maternal Child Health Community Advisory Board and Brooklyn Parenting Center. These initiatives aim to expand access to integrated health services across Brooklyn. The Community Advisory Board collaborates with community-based organizations to provide essential support, while the Brooklyn Parenting Center focuses on early childhood development from conception until age two.
“It is a tremendous honor to be recognized on City and State’s 2025 Trailblazers in Health Care list,” said Dr. Lax. She expressed gratitude towards her clinical teams and emphasized the importance of screening families for unmet needs.
Additionally, Dr. Lax has implemented changes in electronic medical records that enable the medical team to address unsafe living conditions affecting children's health. This initiative has led landlords to improve air quality in buildings, benefiting children with respiratory issues.
“Being recognized by City and State as a 2025 Trailblazers in Health Care is a well-deserved honor for Dr. Lax,” stated Dr. Jeffrey Avner, Chair of Pediatrics at Maimonides Children’s Hospital.
In addition to her role at Maimonides, Dr. Lax serves as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, where she educates others on patient advocacy and social determinants of health.
