Governor Kathy Hochul has announced a significant financial commitment to support educational initiatives within the City University of New York (CUNY) system. Over $1.5 million will be allocated to the CUNY Mexican Studies Institute at Lehman College, aimed at expanding its role as a resource for Mexican and Mexican American communities in New York. An additional $250,000 will establish the Carol Robles-Román scholarship fund at CUNY’s John Jay College of Criminal Justice.
“Investing in education is investing in New York’s future,” stated Governor Hochul. “This nearly $2 million investment at CUNY will honor Carol Robles-Román’s long career of public service and create more resources for students on campus while also continuing to build on my commitment to make higher education more accessible and transformative for all New Yorkers.”
CUNY Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez expressed gratitude, noting that the funding would empower both the CUNY Mexican Studies Institute's mission and honor Carol Robles-Román's legacy: “We are grateful to Gov. Hochul for these investments that will help CUNY make good on its promise to be a transformative engine of social mobility for all New Yorkers.”
The funds directed towards the CUNY Mexican Studies Institute will support educational resources, programs promoting social mobility, and research on Mexican history and culture within New York City's diverse landscape. Lehman College President Fernando Delgado emphasized the significance of this initiative: “Mexicans and Mexican-Americans have played a vital role in the economic and cultural growth of New York City... We thank Governor Hochul for her unwavering support of public education.”
At John Jay College, the Carol Robles Román Award for Legal Excellence aims to aid students who excel academically with a dedication to public service careers. Karol V. Mason, President of John Jay College, highlighted Robles-Román's impact: “Carol Robles-Román was a fierce advocate for justice... The award honors her legacy and will empower John Jay students inspired by her passion for public service.”
Founded in 2012, the CUNY Mexican Studies Institute has been pivotal in advancing opportunities through targeted research and comprehensive services across New York State.
