Taiwanese artist Tong Yang-Tze will create two large-scale Chinese calligraphy works for the 2024 Great Hall Commission at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. This project marks her first major undertaking in the United States and is part of The Met's ongoing series of contemporary commissions.

Tong, based in Taipei, is renowned for her monumental calligraphy that integrates Chinese characters with three-dimensional space. Her work explores the conceptual and compositional limits of calligraphy while staying true to its essence as an art form dedicated to writing. She believes in the significance of written characters in Chinese cultural identity and their potential for impact beyond language barriers.

"The Great Hall Commission is part of The Met’s series of contemporary commissions," according to a museum statement, "in which the Museum invites artists to create new works of art, establishing a dialogue between the artist's practice, The Met collection, the physical Museum, and The Met's audiences."

The exhibition receives support from various benefactors including the Director’s Fund, Mr. T.H. Tung, Oscar L. Tang and H.M. Agnes Hsu-Tang, Jenny Yeh, and Winsing Arts Foundation.
