In November 2024, the American Wing marks its centennial with a reinstallation of its vast art and design collection. The newly interpreted galleries, spread across three floors, will highlight connections within the Wing's expanding hemispheric holdings. These range from the mid-17th to mid-20th century, including some contemporary pieces, and aim to present meaningful storylines.
Established in 1924, the American Wing initially showcased 17th- and 18th-century furniture, silver and metalwork, ceramics, glass, textiles, and architectural fragments. These were often displayed in period-room settings. Over time, the department has broadened its collection to encompass a wider variety of works by North American creators. Today, more than 75 galleries exhibit these collections alongside The Met’s foundational holdings of American painting, sculpture, and works on paper.
The reinstallation will juxtapose well-known objects with recent acquisitions and select works from across the Museum. Key external loans will also be featured to inspire new dialogues that enhance understanding of American art, history, and culture. This effort is guided by expansive scholarship and input from curatorial and community voices involved in redefining American art.
