Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie and Environmental Conservation Committee Chair Deborah J. Glick have revealed that the Enacted State Fiscal Year (SFY) 2024-25 Budget includes a substantial investment of $2.5 billion for environmental initiatives, with $400 million specifically designated for the New York State Environmental Protection Fund (EPF).

"Safeguarding the environmental health and natural resources of our state remains a vital priority for the Assembly Majority," emphasized Speaker Heastie, highlighting the importance of the investments in the budget in supporting initiatives to protect ecosystems, mitigate pollution, and ensure safe drinking water.

Assemblymember Glick echoed these sentiments, stating, "Protecting the environment is not only a matter of public health and safety but also about economic vitality," underscoring the budget's commitment to reducing air and water contamination, promoting ecological sustainability, and preparing for the challenges posed by climate change.

In addition to the allocation for the EPF, the budget also includes $500 million to bolster New York's clean water infrastructure under the Clean Water Infrastructure Act (CWIA).

Assemblymember Steve Otis, a former mayor, remarked on the significance of the budget's support for clean water projects, emphasizing that these initiatives help local governments advance crucial water quality projects without straining their budgets or burdening taxpayers. Assemblymember John McDonald, also a former mayor, emphasized the long-term benefits of this funding, stating, "This money provides local municipalities the opportunity to rebuild their water infrastructure and provide clean drinking water for generations of residents."

The Enacted Budget further establishes a fund to enhance air quality in communities where levels exceed federal ozone standards. Notably, funds will be distributed to disadvantaged communities based on their representation within the overall areas served by the projects.

The Assembly's commitment to environmental protection and sustainable infrastructure development is evident in the significant financial support outlined in the SFY 2024-25 Budget, aiming to ensure a healthier, cleaner, and more resilient future for New York State.
