CUNY TV, the public educational television station of The City University of New York, has added three more New York Emmy Awards to its accolades. These awards were presented during the 67th annual awards gala at the New York Marriott Marquis. With these wins, CUNY TV's total number of Emmy Awards now stands at 44.
The awards recognized two programs: "Puerto Rican Voices," an investigative series produced by CENTRO, the Center for Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College, which received two awards; and "CUNY Laureates," a documentary series highlighting notable CUNY graduates, which won its first New York Emmy.
Maite Junco, CUNY Senior Vice Chancellor for Communications and Marketing, commented on the achievement: “This latest batch of New York Emmy Awards represents the strength of CUNY TV’s ability to tell stories that New Yorkers want to see. We extend our congratulations to the CUNY TV team and CENTRO for the wins and for the work they do every day to keep our city informed.”
"CUNY Laureates" was honored for a segment featuring Nobel laureate Julius Axelrod, a graduate from The City College of New York in 1933. Axelrod made significant contributions to the pharmaceutical industry.
The winning episodes of "Puerto Rican Voices" addressed issues such as Puerto Rico's transformation into a destination sought by mainland Americans as a "tax haven" and how Maternillo in Fajardo is striving for improved public services following economic challenges after losing ferry services.
Chiqui Cartagena, Interim Executive Director at CUNY TV, expressed excitement about being acknowledged in what she described as “the most competitive television market in the country.” She stated: “We remain dedicated to leveraging CUNY’s history and community to amplify the stories that New Yorkers want to learn more about.”
This year’s nominations saw CUNY TV programming receiving 23 nods—a record-breaking number for the station.
