Ten schools from the City University of New York (CUNY) have been recognized as 2024 Fulbright Hispanic-Serving Institution Leaders by the U.S. Department of State. This marks the highest number of institutions from any university system in the country to receive this designation, and they are the only ones in New York State to do so. The announcement was made at the annual conference of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities.

The list includes 51 colleges and universities, with CUNY standing out due to its high engagement with the Fulbright Program since its inception in 2021. Among those recognized are City College of New York and CUNY Graduate Center in the doctoral category; Baruch College, College of Staten Island, Hunter College, John Jay College of Criminal Justice, Lehman College, and Queens College for master’s programs; and Borough of Manhattan Community College and Bronx Community College in the associate degree category.

“CUNY is proud of its long history of producing diverse Fulbright scholars and our growing partnership with the Fulbright HSI Leaders program,” said CUNY Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez. “This year’s designation... signifies our commitment to supporting educational opportunity for Hispanic students throughout our system as well as for students and faculty around the world.”

The Fulbright HSI Leaders Initiative recognizes institutions that demonstrate significant engagement with the Fulbright Program through various forms including hosting international recipients like Scholars-in-Residence or Foreign Language Teaching Assistants. Unlike “Top Producers,” which focuses on fellowship awards numbers, this initiative encourages a broader involvement within campus communities.

CUNY has consistently been acknowledged as an HSI Leader since 2021 when seven schools were part of its inaugural cohort. The university often hosts global Fulbright recipients who join a community representing over 200 nations where more than 170 languages are spoken across its campuses.

Historically aligned with inclusivity goals akin to those upheld by the Fulbright Program itself—promoting mutual understanding between U.S citizens and other countries—the initiative underscores how both entities aim toward diversity among participants they recruit or support.

Founded back in1847 as America’s first free public institution dedicated solely towards higher education endeavors while maintaining affordability standards alongside quality offerings—it propels low-income individuals into middle-class standings much faster compared against Ivy League counterparts combined efforts alone!
