Around 150 accepted applicants visited Columbia University's Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons (VP&S) in mid-April. The event, known as “Life at VP&S,” provided insights into the medical school experience.
The two-day event included tours of Washington Heights and the medical center, highlighting campus resources related to diversity, inclusion, belonging, student support, career advising, and research. Attendees also learned about student-run free clinics and community service opportunities.
VP&S leadership addressed the prospective students, including interim dean James McKiernan; vice dean for education Monica Lypson; associate deans Frederick Ehlert, Jean-Marie Alves-Bradford, Salila Kurra, William Turner, Anil Lalwani, Rosa Lee, and assistant dean Donald Quest.
On the first day, a panel discussion with VP&S alumni was led by Jay Vyas, who spoke on physician-scientist programs. The day also featured sessions on community affairs, global and population health education, and the primary care scholars program. Social activities were arranged by various student offices. The day concluded with an introduction to narrative medicine by Dr. Rita Charon.
Current VP&S students hosted the prospective students, offering personal insights into the school. Attendees also enjoyed a reception at 50 Haven with performances by current students.
