Rep. Nydia Velázquez, a longstanding member of the U.S. Congress representing New York’s 7th district, recently shared a series of thoughts via social media addressing key issues and events. Velázquez, who succeeded Stephen Solarz in 1993, is known for her focus on socioeconomic issues affecting her constituents and broader U.S. policy.
On April 18, 2025, Velázquez underscored her commitment to economic fairness in a tweet, stating, "Proud to be a founding member of the Monopoly Busters Caucus." She highlighted the economic challenges posed by corporate monopolies, asserting, "Corporate monopolies have gutted local economies, crushed small biz, and driven up prices." Velázquez argued that while the Trump administration seeks tax cuts for the wealthy, Congress should prioritize "workers, consumers, and competition."
On the same day, at a later hour, she brought attention to maternal health during #BlackMaternalhealthWeek with a tweet saying, "Over 80% of pregnancy-related deaths are preventable." Velázquez stressed the importance of advocacy for community-serving programs, such as Medicaid, to ensure "Black mothers have equal access to health resources."
Two days later, on April 20, Velázquez reached out to her constituents in NY-07 in a festive message, tweeting, "Wishing everyone in NY-07 a happy Easter! May this day be filled with peace and time with your loved ones."
Nydia Velázquez, who was born in Yabucoa, Puerto Rico in 1953, resides in Brooklyn and holds a BA from the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras, obtained in 1974. She is a vocal advocate for various causes, notably human rights and economic equity.
