Juilliard has announced the return of the Starling-DeLay Symposium on Violin Studies, scheduled from June 23 to 27 in New York City. This marks the 13th edition of the biennial event, which brings together violin professionals and teachers for master classes, recitals, and workshops aimed at enhancing pedagogical skills and honoring the tradition of violin studies. Applications are open until May 1.
The symposium celebrates the legacy of Dorothy DeLay, a renowned violin educator, by promoting her holistic approach to mentorship. Professional violinists, violists, and teachers will gather to refine methods for nurturing young performers' artistry. The program is led by guest artists and faculty members who were mentored by DeLay.
Brian Lewis, a faculty member at the University of Texas at Austin's Butler School of Music, returns as artistic director alongside Juilliard music faculty member Catherine Cho as artistic advisor. Both studied under DeLay.
This year's faculty includes Timothy Chooi, Cornelia Heard, Noa Kageyama, Katie Lansdale, Jaime Laredo, Joseph Lin, Itzhak Perlman, and Areta Zhulla. More names will be announced soon.
Dorothy DeLay was known for empowering her students beyond their performances by encouraging them to embrace their unique qualities. Her teaching fostered a community of thoughtful musicians who continue to share her philosophy with future generations.
The application deadline is May 1 with preference given to professional violinists or violists and teachers.
More information is available at juilliard.edu/symposium. The symposium receives support from the Dorothy Richard Starling Foundation.
