The City University of New York (CUNY) has confirmed the appointment of Claudia V. Schrader as the new president of York College. This permanent appointment follows her interim presidency role since January 2024. CUNY's Board of Trustees endorsed her position, marking Schrader as the eighth president of the college in Jamaica, Queens. Her presidency begins on May 1.
During her interim leadership, Schrader made noteworthy contributions to York College. She upgraded campus facilities, such as establishing a graduate student lounge and improving the cafeteria and public safety areas. She also led initiatives like the York Opportunity Network, aiming to support pre-college youth. Furthermore, Schrader began the college’s Middle States Self Study process.
CUNY Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez commended Schrader, stating, “President Schrader is a proven leader whose passion for CUNY’s mission of educational opportunity and excellence has had a significant impact on a generation of students throughout our system.” He expressed confidence in her continued positive influence at York College.
Schrader expressed her gratitude for the role, stating, “I am profoundly grateful for the opportunity to serve as president of York College, a vital anchor in the City University of New York.” She emphasized the college's role in fostering educational excellence and economic mobility.
Before York, Schrader was the inaugural African American president at Kingsborough Community College. Her accomplishments include opening a satellite location and launching the KCC FLEX program, enhancing online and hybrid degree opportunities. Under her guidance, Kingsborough reached the final stage for the Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence twice. Schrader was also recognized by Aspen’s College Excellence Program with the New Presidents Fellowship.
Schrader's career includes leadership positions at Bronx Community College and Medgar Evers College within CUNY, as well as William Patterson University in New Jersey. Originating from St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands, she holds degrees from Rutgers University and Teachers College, Columbia University.
CUNY stands as the nation’s largest urban public university, providing education to nearly 240,000 students across New York City. Known for its affordability and quality, it supports a larger proportion of low-income students transitioning to the middle class compared to Ivy League colleges combined. More than 80% of its graduates contribute to New York City's diverse economy and cultural life.
