SELF Magazine recently highlighted the potential benefits of using knee pillows for alleviating back and lower body pain. According to Alice Chen, MD, a physiatrist at HSS, knee pillows can significantly impact spinal alignment and the lower body. Dr. Chen explained that when sleeping on one's side, the weight of the top knee often rests on the bottom knee, creating uncomfortable pressure. This pressure can also affect the hips, causing them to collapse forward and misaligning the spine.
Dr. Chen further noted that using a knee pillow provides additional space between the knees, which helps distribute the weight of the top knee more evenly. This adjustment allows for parallel and stabilized hips and maintains a neutral spine position.
