It is with deep sadness that Speaker Heastie announces the passing of Dr. Hazel N. Dukes, who served as president of the New York State NAACP. Dr. Dukes was a committed civil rights leader who dedicated her life to advocating for equality and ensuring representation at decision-making tables.

Speaker Heastie expressed his personal connection to Dr. Dukes, stating, "Not only was she a stalwart in the political and advocacy arenas, she was an amazing friend to so many. I was proud to call her a close friend and mother figure." He also emphasized her impact on the community, saying, "Her legacy is an inspiration to me. She made our community, our state and our country a better place to live."
