Dr. Esteban Emiliani Sanz, an internationally recognized expert in kidney stone treatment and prevention, has joined NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn and the Department of Urology at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. The department is ranked second in its specialty by U.S. News & World Report. Dr. Emiliani Sanz will serve as a clinical professor and chief of endourology, focusing on conditions related to ureter narrowing and stone diseases.

Previously, Dr. Emiliani Sanz was a clinical associate professor at Fundació Puigvert, Autonomous University of Barcelona. His role as chief of endourology will involve integrating new technologies into surgeries for effective patient treatment. He plans to offer personalized metabolic evaluations to identify the causes of kidney stones and implement tailored prevention strategies.

“Kidney stones offer a window into improving a patient’s overall health and wellbeing,” said Dr. Emiliani Sanz. “Although they are a disease, they also can indicate a greater health problem that we can help manage."

He provides both minimally invasive and noninvasive treatment options, including medication to dissolve stones without surgery, laser technology, and less-invasive surgical procedures for large stones.

Bret J. Rudy, MD, executive vice president at NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn stated, “Dr. Emiliani Sanz will propel our institution forward... Our team in Brooklyn is excited to work alongside him."

Research is central to Dr. Emiliani Sanz's work; he has published 130 articles in urology journals and received the Arthur Smith Award from The Endourological Society in 2024.

Herbert Lepor, MD commented on his contributions: “Dr. Emiliani Sanz’s precise approach to care will greatly enhance patients’ quality of life once they leave the hospital.”

Dr. Emiliani Sanz completed his residency at Fundació Puigvert and became a fellow of the European Board of Urology. He further specialized in endourology at Tenon Hospital in Paris and Muljibhai Patel Urological Hospital in India before earning his PhD from the Autonomous University of Barcelona and Sorbonne University.

He serves on editorial boards for several urology journals and is involved with international organizations such as the Endourological Society.

NYU Langone Health is noted for its high-quality care across various specialties with locations throughout New York and Florida.
