Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) has appointed Dr. Matthew T. Drake as the new chief of the Division of Endocrinology and director of the Metabolic Bone Service, effective January 1, 2025. Dr. Drake takes over from Dr. Emily Stein, who served as Interim Director since March 2023.

In his new role at HSS, Dr. Drake will focus on maintaining excellence in clinical care, education, and research within his division. He will collaborate with HSS physicians to enhance patient outcomes and work closely with orthopedic surgeons on bone health issues that may impact surgical results.

“Dr. Drake is a world-renowned endocrinologist with clinical and research expertise on age-related bone loss, and we enthusiastically welcome him to HSS,” said S. Louis Bridges Jr., MD, PhD.

Drake's research focuses on age-related bone loss mechanisms and cancer's impact on bone health. His efforts have earned him numerous grants from the National Institutes of Health.

He has been involved in various professional activities including serving as an independent content reviewer for the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASMBR).

His academic background includes graduating Magna Cum Laude from Harvard College with an AB degree in Biology, earning an MD and PhD from Washington University, followed by residency at Duke University Medical Center.
