The University of Miami Health System (UHealth) and the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) have announced a collaboration to provide advanced musculoskeletal care in South Florida. This partnership will combine HSS's expertise with UHealth's orthopedic physicians at the new UHealth SoLé Mia facility, set to open in North Miami in fall 2025.

Dr. Dipen J. Parekh, chief operating officer of UHealth, stated, "UHealth and HSS are both academic medical centers similarly focused on leading research and delivering excellence to patients in a clinical setting." He emphasized that this alliance would make UHealth SoLé Mia a significant medical destination.

HSS has been recognized as the top institution for orthopedics globally by Newsweek and nationally by U.S. News & World Report for 15 consecutive years. Sheeraz Qureshi, M.D., M.B.A., chief medical officer at HSS Florida, remarked on the collaboration: "We are proud to partner with the University of Miami Health System and look forward to advancing the field of orthopedics together for South Florida residents."

The collaboration will involve building a comprehensive musculoskeletal program at the North Miami facility, including imaging, surgeries, and rehabilitation services. Dr. Lee Kaplan will serve as Medical Director for Integrated UM/HSS Orthopedics Musculoskeletal Program.

Aaron Snyder from the University of Miami Strategy Team highlighted that this strategic alliance aims to enhance patient experience and outcomes beyond just North Miami. Dr. Francis J. Hornicek noted it as “a win-win for patients in South Florida.”

Tara M. McCoy, CEO of HSS Florida, added: “Guided by our mission to improve mobility and enhance quality of life for all, HSS is committed to building partnerships that drive innovation and deliver lasting impact.”

In addition to their partnership efforts at SoLé Mia, UHealth and HSS will host an annual symposium on orthopedic innovations in Ft. Lauderdale.
