Brooklyn, NY — Maimonides Health has announced the birth of Brooklyn's first baby of 2025. Malia Carrasquillo was born at 3:54 am on January 1, weighing eight pounds, nine ounces and measuring 21 inches long. The newborn is the daughter of Marie Aserat and Mark Carrasquillo from Crown Heights, Brooklyn.

“Malia is full of surprises. Her original due date was Christmas. We have been joking that she only gets one present. I think she heard us,” said Marie Aserat, Malia’s mother. “To be an entire week late and then the first baby born on another holiday, marking a whole new year — you make plans and God laughs.”

Both mother and daughter are reported to be in good health under the care of Dr. June Ng and the labor and delivery team at Maimonides Medical Center.

“Welcoming Brooklyn’s first baby of the year is always a special moment for our entire team,” stated Dr. Janet Stein, Director of Obstetrics at Maimonides Health. “It’s a wonderful way to begin 2025, and we’re honored to be part of this family’s celebration.”

Maimonides Health is recognized as Brooklyn's largest healthcare system, delivering approximately 6,000 babies each year. This makes it one of New York State's busiest labor and delivery programs. The hospital offers comprehensive care with its advanced facilities and skilled medical staff for both routine and high-risk deliveries.

In celebration of the occasion, the family received a special New Year’s gift basket from Maimonides Health containing diapers, toys, burpies, onesies, and a wine glass for the new year.
