Maimonides Medical Center has been designated as a Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery (MIGS), according to an announcement made on December 23, 2024. This recognition signifies that Maimonides has met both national and international standards set by the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC) for patient safety and quality care in minimally invasive gynecological procedures.
The hospital's OB/GYN and Women’s Health group satisfied rigorous criteria, including staffing requirements and access to advanced technology. Key factors in their acknowledgment included surgical experience and patient volume, areas where the physicians exceeded expectations.
Eight gynecologic surgeons at Maimonides have been recognized as Master Surgeons by the SRC. These include Dr. Scott Chudnoff, Dr. Justin To, Dr. Ioannis Alagkiozidis, Dr. Amro Elfeky, Dr. Elishia McKay, Dr. Lindsey Michel, Dr. Albert Palileo, and Dr. Allison Polland.
Additionally, Drs. McKay and Polland were acknowledged as Surgeons of Excellence in Continence Care for Women, with the medical center also being named a Center of Excellence in this area.
The MIGS program at Maimonides is noted as the largest in its borough and offers Brooklyn's only fellowship in this specialty. The minimally invasive techniques are employed to address conditions such as cancer, pelvic floor disorders, endometriosis, fibroids, and adnexal pathology.
Dr. Lindsey Michel highlighted the benefits of these techniques for patients: "For patients, these minimally invasive techniques reduce pain, scarring, blood loss, shorten recovery time, and lower the risk of infections and complications."
Dr. Scott Chudnoff emphasized the institution's comprehensive approach to women's health: “Our Women’s Health Institute is a destination for specialty care for women of all ages... We have created an environment offering comprehensive care for all women’s health needs.”
Gary M. Pratt from SRC commended Maimonides: “We’re proud to recognize Maimonides Medical Center for its commitment to advancing and providing quality care for all patients.”
Maimonides was also noted as Brooklyn’s first hospital to offer robotic surgery and remains its largest center for such procedures with over 1,300 minimally invasive surgeries performed annually across various specialties.
The Surgical Review Corporation (SRC), established in 2003 as a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing surgical care worldwide through accreditation programs like this one awarded to Maimonides.
