St. John’s University hosted its first "Fiscal Fright Haunted House" event this Halloween season, aimed at educating attendees about fiscal threats such as scams, fraud, risky financial choices, unexpected disasters, and economic inequity. The event took place on October 29 at the Greenberg School of Risk Management in Manhattan and on October 31 at the Tobin College of Business in Queens.
The format was similar to a research fair, with students presenting two posters each. The "Face Our Fears" poster highlighted current statistics and impacts of their chosen topics, while the "Seek Out Solutions" poster provided strategies and resources for addressing these challenges.
Guest judges from the Department of Treasury and Maspeth Federal Savings joined students in voting for the most creatively scary villain. Among the characters were The Catfish, The Glass Ceiling, and the Streaming Screaming Werewolf. Additionally, St. John’s Office of Financial Aid participated by addressing students' concerns about student loan repayment.
The event served not only as an educational opportunity for St. John’s students but also as a soft launch for future high school and public programs aimed at community engagement.
