AARP recently provided guidance on how to assist individuals undergoing knee replacement surgery. The advice includes practical steps for caregivers to prepare a safe and comfortable environment at home for the patient.
Catherine Wysin, PT, DPT, a physical therapist at HSS, recommends removing throw rugs, clutter, and other tripping hazards from the home. “The patient’s balance is going to be off,” Wysin explained.
Wysin also emphasizes considering stairs and seating arrangements. If the patient needs to climb stairs to enter their home or access their bed, physical therapists will ensure they know how to do so safely before leaving the surgical center. However, some caregivers may prefer setting up a temporary sleeping and resting area on the ground floor. Wysin suggests preparing this space with a bed, sofa, or chair/ottoman combination that allows the patient to rest with a straight leg. She cautions against using recliners as they might bend the knee.
