Polly de Mille, an exercise physiologist at HSS, discusses the effects of taking a break from running. According to her, even a few weeks of reduced activity can lead to noticeable changes in heart function due to detraining. This observation is supported by a 2018 study on marathoners published in the Journal of Applied Physiology.

Despite these changes, de Mille suggests that recovery is achievable. "If you take a month off, it will take you about a month to get back to where you were," she explains.
