Maimonides Health recently showcased the capabilities of Brooklyn's largest robotic surgery program during a public exhibition held from November 12 to 14. The event took place in the Main Lobby of Maimonides Medical Center, where surgeons demonstrated robotically assisted surgery and discussed its benefits, such as shorter recovery times, reduced pain and medication needs, decreased blood loss and scarring, and lower infection risks.
The exhibition featured advanced equipment including Intuitive’s ION endoluminal system, the DaVinci Robotic Surgical System, Stryker’s Mako robotic-arm technology, and GLOBUS Medical’s ExcelsiusGPS system. These technologies enhance surgical precision by combining robotics with navigation tools.
Ken Gibbs, CEO and President of Maimonides Health, stated that "over two decades ago, Maimonides became the first hospital in Brooklyn to offer robotic surgery to patients." He emphasized that the hospital remains a leader in this field with over 35 surgeons expected to perform more than 1,300 minimally invasive procedures by year-end.
Patrick Borgen, MD, Chair of Maimonides’ Department of Surgery said: “Our surgeons here at Maimonides are experts in what they do," adding that these tools allow patients "to return to their lives and daily activities more quickly."
Maimonides offers robotic surgeries across various specialties including general surgery and urological surgery. Its OB/GYN Specialty Services Department was recognized as Brooklyn's only Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecology (COEMIG) by the Surgical Review Corporation this year. Furthermore, Maimonides Medical Center was ranked #2 for orthopedic surgery and #3 for prostate surgery in New York state by Healthgrades.
