Rabbi Aryeh Lebowitz has been appointed as the Abraham Arbesfeld Torah Dean of RIETS, effective at the beginning of this semester. Rabbi Lebowitz is recognized for his scholarship and teaching within the Jewish community. In his new role, he will oversee the educational program of the semikhah program and all related kollelim, while also serving as a Rosh Yeshiva and continuing to deliver regular shiurim.

Rabbi Dr. Ari Berman, President and Rosh Yeshiva of YU and RIETS, expressed satisfaction with the appointment: “I am deeply pleased to appoint Rabbi Lebowitz to this position, in close partnership with the senior Roshei Yeshiva, the RIETS Board of Trustees and its chair, Lance Hirt. Rabbi Lebowitz is not just a student of our Yeshiva; he is also one of the most distinguished representatives of our Yeshiva’s core Torah values and ideals.”

This change coincides with an expanded role for Rabbi Dr. Yosef Kalinsky, who will now serve as Max and Marion Grill Administrative Dean in addition to his responsibilities as Dean of Undergraduate Torah Studies.

“Rabbi Kalinsky is one of the most trusted leaders in our Yeshiva University community,” said Rabbi Berman. “His partnership in building our Yeshiva has led to the enormous growth and success we have experienced these past few years.”

Rabbi Lebowitz commented on his new role: "I am deeply thankful for this new appointment and for the opportunity to work so closely with my colleague and friend Rabbi Yosef Kalinsky. I will remain, above all, a teacher of Torah and students. Our vision is to help elevate our students’ voices and ensure that decision-makers stay closely attuned to their needs."

Rabbi Kalinsky shared his enthusiasm: "I am excited to collaborate with Rabbi Lebowitz, an accomplished Talmid Chacham, leader, colleague, and friend. The rabbinate is constantly evolving; we must continue to adapt to provide the best education for future leaders."

The Abraham Arbesfeld chair was endowed by Hy Arbesfeld z”l and Ann Arbesfeld in memory of Hy’s father. This elevation from Director of Semikhah Program to Torah Dean honors their legacy.

New educational opportunities are planned at RIETS under this leadership transition. "RIETS is larger and more impactful than ever," said Rabbi Kalinsky. "We will continue our historic legacy by re-examining the semikhah curriculum, bringing dynamic speakers for contemporary issues discussions, working closely with musmachim on life decisions, and expanding master's degree programs."

Rabbis Lebowitz and Kalinsky succeed Interim Dean Rabbi Michael Taubes after Dean Emeritus Rabbi Menachem Penner took on roles at Rabbinical Council of America.

Lance Hirt '87YC praised RIETS' adaptability: “As the world changes rapidly, RIETS remains dynamic... With Rabbis Lebowitz and Kalinsky in key positions...our education's impact will rise.”
