Assemblyman Michael Novakhov (R-Brooklyn) has applauded the decision made by the Lincoln Center to cancel a scheduled performance by the Mariinsky Group, a pro-Putin ensemble led by Valery Gergiev. The group's participation in the 25th Anniversary Gala of the Youth America Grand Prix was halted following a campaign spearheaded by Assemblyman Novakhov, supported by lawmakers and community organizations.
“I am pleased to announce that the Lincoln Center has heeded our concerns and canceled the Mariinsky Group's performance. Hosting individuals who support Putin's war of aggression in Ukraine is not in line with the values of such a prestigious venue in New York. Thanks to the efforts of my Minority colleagues and me, our voices were heard, and the performance was called off. As a representative of a district with a substantial Ukrainian-American community, I remain committed to standing against Putin and his oppressive regime,” said Novakhov.
The successful efforts led by Assemblyman Novakhov and his allies resulted in the cancellation of the controversial performance, sending a strong message against supporting Putin's actions in Ukraine. The decision reflects a stance in solidarity with the Ukrainian-American community and upholds the values of the prestigious venue in New York.
The cancellation serves as a testament to the power of advocacy and collective action in promoting awareness and standing up against oppressive regimes. Assemblyman Novakhov's dedication to this cause highlights the importance of speaking out against injustices and supporting those affected by conflicts around the world.
