Rabbi Dr. Ari Berman, President of Yeshiva University, set a tone of resilience and determination at the Evening of Unity, Solidarity and Story event, emphasizing the ongoing call to action within the Jewish community. He expressed, “On Oct. 7, Jewish history called. It has asked us to stand up and stand out as Jews. It has asked us to fight terrorism and combat hatred. It has asked us to protest, to not remain silent or complacent, to unify and unite in common cause to free our hostages. It asked us on Oct. 7 and it is still asking that of us now.”
The event, held on April 7, 2024, marked the six-month anniversary of the brutal Hamas attack on southern Israel. Over 1,000 members of the YU community and guests gathered to show support for Israel and advocate for the release of the 133 hostages still held captive by Hamas. The evening, organized by YU’s Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks-Herenstein Center for Values and Leadership and the Office of Student Life, featured a blend of song, prayer, and strength.
Dr. Erica Brown, vice provost for values and leadership, urged students to continue their advocacy efforts, while Rabbi Berman inspired attendees to stand strong in the ongoing struggle for the hostages' freedom. Rebecca Henner ‘26S highlighted YU's initiatives, including Operation Torah Shield and political action missions, emphasizing the community's commitment to the cause.
Rachel Goldberg-Polin, the mother of a captive, passionately called for a hostage deal to ensure the Jewish people's freedom during Passover. Her emotional plea resonated with the audience, who joined her husband, Jon, in reciting Psalm 130 and advocating for political action.
Louis Har, a former captive rescued by IDF soldiers, shared his harrowing experience and the jubilation of his rescue. His resilience and gratitude were palpable as he stood alongside his family, recounting his ordeal.
The evening concluded with a powerful reading of “The Silver Platter” by Kfir Slonimski ‘25YC, symbolizing the sacrifices made for Israel. The event showcased unity and hope, even in the face of darkness.
Dr. Brown reflected on the event, stating, “The hostage solidarity event on April 7 was a beautiful evening of song, speeches, and unity at a time of prolonged crisis in Israel.” She emphasized the need to continue protesting and praying, drawing inspiration from the stories shared that night.
The event received media coverage on local television channels, highlighting the impactful speeches and moments shared by Rabbi Berman, the Goldberg-Polin family, and Louis Har. YU expressed gratitude to the New York City Police Department and YU’s Office of Security for ensuring a safe and secure event.
