New York, NY – Congressman Dan Goldman (NY-10) today issued the following statement after FEMA announced New York will be receiving $30.5 million in grant funding for the care of asylum seekers.

“While Republican governors in border states have played politics with human lives by sending migrants, including many asylum seekers fleeing violence and persecution, to cities around the country, New York City has proudly served as a model for the nation in welcoming these migrants with open arms and assisting them with shelter, food, medical care, and support.

“New York has spent more than $1 billion to support the more than 60,000 migrants that have come to our city seeking a better life, yet FEMA has allotted only $30.5 million to New York City to contribute to this expense. This is woefully insufficient. It is incumbent on the federal government to pay its fair share for these unexpected immigration-related expenses.

“I will continue to work with my colleagues in the Congressional delegation and the Adams administration to ensure the Biden administration recognizes the urgency of the crisis our city is facing and provides sufficient funding to reimburse the City for its massive expense needed to address this humanitarian issue.”
