Washington, DC – Congressman Dan Goldman (NY-10) joined his colleagues in calling on the Biden Administration to impose sanctions on the Supreme Leader of Iran and the President of Iran following human rights violations stemming from the murder of Mahsa Amini by Iranian authorities. The Mahsa Amini Human Rights and Security Accountability (MAHSA) Act would compel President Biden to determine which pre-existing sanctions now apply to Iran’s most senior leadership and their affiliates. The bill would mandate that the Administration utilize all available tools to ensure accountability, including the imposition of visa bans and sanctions in response to human rights abuses, corruption, and support for terrorism.

“The Iranian Regime must be held accountable for the murder of Mahsa Amini and the continued brutalization and imprisonment of protestors standing up for their fundamental human rights,” Congressman Dan Goldman said. “The Iranian government’s continued pattern of human rights abuses underscores the need for decisive sanctions against the regime. The United States has a moral obligation to support the brave Iranians fighting fortheir freedom.”

Last September, a 22-year-old woman named Mahsa Amini was arrested by Iran’s so-called “morality police” for supposedly wearing her hijab improperly. According to eyewitnesses, she was brutally beaten in custody and died as a result. Since her horrific death, the Iranian people have courageously protested against their oppressive government, demanding accountability and basic human rights.

Since Masha’s death, nearly 20,000 people have been arrested, many on charges that could lead to a death sentence, and over 500 people have been killed. Human rights organizations warn of increased use of lethal force against women and children as well as mistreatment and torture of protestors.
