The Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), an academic medical center specializing in musculoskeletal health, has announced Kevin M. Koch, PhD, as the founding Director of the Applied Sciences Institute and Vice Chair of Research in Radiology. These positions became effective on April 1.
Dr. Koch will oversee the forthcoming Applied Sciences Institute at HSS, responsible for advancing technologies in musculoskeletal care worldwide. His duties include managing innovations from HSS research, leading teams in medical device and digital health advancements, and guiding the use of AI and informatics in technology development. As Vice Chair of Research in Radiology, Koch will direct imaging research initiatives and help translate findings into clinical practice at HSS.
Dr. Koch is expected to build strategic partnerships with industry leaders and academic institutions while enhancing interdisciplinary collaboration within HSS. "Dr. Koch’s appointment is one of many actions we’re taking to reinvigorate our world-class research," said Suzanne A. Maher, PhD, HSS Chief Research Officer. She added that the new Applied Sciences Institute marks a new age of musculoskeletal science at HSS.
Before joining HSS, Dr. Koch served at the Medical College of Wisconsin in various roles, including Vice Chair of Research in Radiology and Executive Director of the Center for Imaging Research. His work experience includes developing MRI technologies at GE Healthcare, where he partnered with Hollis G. Potter, MD, to create and validate a 3D multi-spectral imaging MRI technique.
"I’m excited and honored to join HSS," Dr. Koch stated. He expressed optimism in continuing his collaboration with Dr. Potter and expanding partnerships at HSS to explore new imaging technologies for research and patient care.
Dr. Potter noted the importance of Dr. Koch's leadership, stating that imaging is vital for many orthopedic innovations and that his role would enhance the impact of HSS's work.
Dr. Koch graduated from Truman State University and obtained his PhD in physics from Yale University. His professional achievements include publishing 80 peer-reviewed papers and holding more than 20 patents. His research has garnered funding from major institutions, and he has earned widespread recognition in the field of radiology.
Dr. Koch's affiliations include Phi Beta Kappa and several radiology and orthopedic societies.
