USC sophomore and basketball standout JuJu Watkins experienced a setback when her knee gave way during the Trojans’ NCAA tournament match against Mississippi State. The incident concluded with an MRI revealing a torn ACL, effectively ending Watkins' season and potentially sidelining her for an extended period into the following season.

According to Dr. Gabriella E. Ode, a sports medicine surgeon based at the HSS Sports Medicine Institute, recovery from an ACL tear is not as straightforward as adhering to a set timeline. “We’ve gotten much better at not just looking at it as a specific window, like, ‘OK, nine months and now you’re ready,’” Dr. Ode remarked. Recovery times can differ significantly between individuals, and a longer period, such as 12 months, is not unusual. Dr. Ode emphasized, “Probably the worst thing that an athlete can do is go back when they’re not ready.”

The article from the Los Angeles Times suggests more insights about what Watkins, and others in similar situations, might encounter during their recovery process.
