NYU Langone Health has appointed Alec C. Kimmelman, MD, PhD, as the new CEO and dean of NYU Grossman School of Medicine. His tenure starts on September 1, following an extensive national search. Dr. Kimmelman succeeds Robert I. Grossman, MD, who has led NYU Langone Health for 18 years.
Dr. Kimmelman has been an integral part of NYU Langone since 2016, notably serving as the director of the Perlmutter Cancer Center since 2023. Kenneth Langone, chair of the NYU Langone Board of Trustees, expressed confidence in Dr. Kimmelman: “We are excited to name Dr. Kimmelman to this position given his extraordinary talent, leadership experience, and strong character."
The appointment comes as NYU Langone Health plans significant expansions, boasting $14.2 billion in revenues last year. The health system was ranked No. 1 out of 115 academic medical centers by Vizient Inc. for the third consecutive year. NYU Langone plans to develop a comprehensive outpatient location in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Dr. Kimmelman commented, “I am humbled and excited to be the next CEO and dean of NYU Langone and appreciate the confidence the Board of Trustees and the search committee have placed in me.” He aims to continue the institution's commitment to patient care, education, and research.
Dr. Grossman will serve as executive vice president to the Board of Trustees after his retirement. He expressed his faith in Dr. Kimmelman, stating, “His wealth of expertise and sharp leadership skills will serve NYU Langone exceedingly well as we continue to advance our mission.”
Fiona B. Druckenmiller, the upcoming chair of NYU Langone’s Board of Trustees, looks forward to working with Dr. Kimmelman: “Ken and Dr. Grossman shared a bold vision... I am excited to cultivate a similar working relationship with Dr. Kimmelman.”
Dr. Kimmelman earned his MD and PhD from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and has built a significant career in oncology, with an extensive publication record and numerous accolades. His research at the Perlmutter Cancer Center has opened new avenues in cancer treatment.
NYU Langone Health has consistently ranked high in patient outcomes, remaining a leader among academic medical centers in the United States.
