Maimonides doctors and surgeons participated in the Brooklyn Public Library's Night in the Library event, held from March 8 to 9. The session featured "Airway: Stories from Doctors Across a Brooklyn Hospital," where medical professionals shared their experiences practicing medicine both locally and globally. Themes included humor, grief, empathy, compassion, hope, and joy.
"Airway" is an open-mic storytelling event that began in 2015 among residency programs in New York City. It was founded by Maimonides emergency physicians Dr. Mert Erogul and Dr. Joshua Schiller. Over the past decade, "Airway" has expanded citywide and is now a regular feature at academic assemblies and hospitals nationwide. The event aims to promote a humanity-based perspective on medical practice, encompassing practitioners, patients, and society.
The Night in the Library marked the first time "Airway" was presented to a nonmedical audience. Alongside Dr. Schiller and Dr. Erogul were Maimonides doctors Dr. Poroshat Shekarloo, Dr. Nakesha King, and Dr. Jessica Poster.
"This marks the first time we’ve ever staged Airway for a public audience," said Dr. Erogul. He expressed gratitude to the Brooklyn Public Library for allowing them to share their passion with fellow Brooklynites.
Dr. Schiller highlighted the importance of sharing their experiences: "As doctors we come face to face with the most difficult shortcomings of our society... It’s not often that we have the opportunity to share these experiences."
This year was also significant as it marked the 10th anniversary of Night in the Library at BPL under the theme “The Sky Above Brooklyn – The Philosophy of the Sublime.” The event featured discussions, performances, and screenings by various authors, academics, artists, and creatives.
