Montefiore Health System is set to launch seven new outpatient programs aimed at addressing mental health care needs in the Bronx. These initiatives, supported by over $18 million from the New York State Office of Mental Health Behavioral Health Center of Excellence program, will focus on urgent and serious mental illnesses, pregnancy-related anxiety and depression, and eating disorders.
The Bronx faces significant challenges in mental healthcare, with psychiatric hospitalization rates double that of New York City as a whole. Many neighborhoods report high levels of psychological distress without adequate mental health treatment.
One key addition is the Urgent Care and Bridge Clinic, designed to provide walk-in care for individuals who might otherwise seek emergency room treatment for conditions such as worsening depression or substance use issues. The clinic aims to bridge patients' care until they can access long-term treatment.
The Women’s Mental Health Perinatal Intensive Outpatient Program will offer comprehensive support for those experiencing anxiety or depression during and after pregnancy. Participants will receive medication management, therapy, meals, group therapy, parenting education, and access to onsite nursery services.
To address eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia, Montefiore is introducing three new programs. These include a Partial Hospitalization Program for Adolescents and Young Adults with diverse meal options reflecting local cultures. An Intensive Outpatient Eating Disorder program will cater to those needing regular support without hospitalization. Additionally, an Outpatient Adult Eating Disorders Program will focus on stress and anxiety related to nutrition.
Another initiative is the First Episode and Early Psychosis Program which supports individuals experiencing symptoms such as hallucinations or delusions. This program assists patients through diagnosis and treatment while helping them manage housing, career, and relationship challenges.
Jonathan E. Alpert of Montefiore stated: “All of healthcare is benefiting from a greater recognition of how our culture...can valuably inform the treatment we receive.” Salimah Velji added: “Building on our already outstanding team...we anticipate hiring the equivalent of 50 full-time roles...Expanding our capacity...will ensure patients receive the right level of care at the right time.”
The new programs are expected to be hosted at Montefiore Behavioral Health Center among other sites. In 2024, Montefiore received funding for additional psychiatric programs in the South Bronx.
