Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso has partnered with the Food Network New York City Wine & Food Festival (NYCWFF) to offer 100 students from John Dewey High School's Business and Culinary Academy a chance to attend this year's FoodieCon. The event, presented by Fratelli Beretta, will take place at Industry City and features prominent content creators in the food and beverage industry. Students will engage in panels, immersive activities, and demonstrations that provide insights into food content creation.
Reynoso emphasized the importance of such opportunities: “Brooklyn has some of the best restaurants not just in New York City but in the world. Innovative Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs like the one at John Dewey High School allow our kids to get ahead of the curve and gain first-hand experience in all aspects of the culinary arts industry. Our partnership with the New York City Wine & Food Festival will further set these students up for success by providing access to the best chefs, entrepreneurs, and influencers in the business.”
John Dewey High School offers one of 84 CTE programs available in Brooklyn. In 2019, it introduced a $3 million kitchen classroom for culinary arts practice. Students also benefit from internships, job shadowing, mentoring, and partnerships through Grant Associates and CCAP.
The NYCWFF returns to Brooklyn from October 17-20 after over ten years in Manhattan. Events like Grand Tasting and Best of Brooklyn kick-off party are scheduled at Brooklyn Army Terminal in Sunset Park. All net proceeds will support God’s Love We Deliver for New Yorkers facing severe illness.
Heather Adelle, Principal of John Dewey High School stated: “We are so grateful to our Brooklyn Borough President, Antonio Reynoso, and the New York City Wine & Food Festival for offering our students a unique opportunity to broaden their horizons... It serves as an immersive educational experience... while fostering a passion for lifelong learning.”
Student Angelina Lorenzana shared her enthusiasm: “Being a student at John Dewey High School’s Culinary Arts program has opened so many doors for me... This program inspires young chefs like myself to be the foodie that I am.”
Lee Brian Schrager, NYCWFF Founder & Director remarked on embracing Brooklyn’s culture: “We’re not just moving venues; we’re intentionally embracing Brooklyn’s rich culture – something I’ve wanted to do for years... Our aim is to provide them with an unparalleled platform to showcase their talent.”
