Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso organized a significant Thanksgiving food distribution event last Friday, providing over 60,000 pounds of fresh produce and non-perishable items to more than 120 community organizations in Brooklyn. This initiative aimed to address food insecurity and support residents during the holiday season.
"Thanksgiving is a time to come together to practice gratitude, eat fresh food, and spend time with loved ones. Unfortunately, for too many Brooklynites, it’s a reminder of the challenges they face to put food on the table," said Reynoso. He expressed gratitude towards partners and staff who contributed to ensuring that more Brooklyn residents could enjoy a Thanksgiving meal.
The event was supported by various partners including UA3, Amazon, Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, C-Town of East Williamsburg, Delta Air Lines, Food Bazaar, Goya, Hispanic Federation, Hunts Point Produce Market, National Grid, Optimum, Ponce Bank, Thrivent Bank, Met Council on Jewish Poverty and the National Supermarket Association.
Anthony Diaz from C-Town of East Williamsburg emphasized their long-standing commitment to serving the Brooklyn community. David Greenfield from Met Council highlighted their contribution of thousands of turkeys across New York as part of their effort to alleviate hunger. Eileen Cifone from National Grid underscored the importance of community support during their annual Season of Giving.
Vic Pascarelli from Optimum praised Reynoso's dedication to addressing community needs through this initiative. Carlos Naudon from Ponce Bank pointed out the rising reliance on food pantries among New Yorkers and stressed the need for local solutions.
The distribution reflects ongoing efforts by local leaders and organizations to combat food insecurity in New York City where nearly 1.3 million residents are affected according to City Harvest.
