Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso has announced the opening of applications for Brooklyn's 18 community boards. These boards, considered the most grassroots level of local government, address a range of issues from land use to transportation projects. Brooklyn, with its 18 districts, hosts the highest number of community boards among New York City's five boroughs. Each board comprises up to 50 volunteers who are residents or have a significant interest in their communities.
Reynoso stated, "When community boards reflect the people they represent and are equipped with a full suite of information, expertise, and resources, they become a true venue for community power." He emphasized the need for diversity on these boards and encouraged applications from various groups including renters and public housing residents.
The application process is open to all New York City residents aged 16 and older until February 14, 2025. Interested individuals can apply online at the Brooklyn Borough President's website. The process involves filling out an application followed by a virtual interview with Reynoso's team.
Reynoso has redirected resources towards supporting these boards through training and advocacy to ensure they remain independent and sustainable. Community boards collaborate with city agencies and officials to incorporate neighborhood perspectives into decision-making processes affecting areas like housing development and public transit.
Meetings occur monthly from September through June within each district. Members are expected to commit approximately six to eight hours monthly for meetings.
