Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) has unveiled a new mural titled "One Hundred Views," created by artist Naomi Reis in collaboration with fifth-grade students from P.S. 183 Robert L. Stevenson Elementary School. The mural, facilitated by ArtBridge, is part of MSK's community engagement efforts and is located on East 66th Street, York Avenue, and 67th Streets around the MSK Cancer Care Pavilion project.
The artwork features imagery of plants, trees, local landmarks, and architectural details that reflect the students' community. It coincides with the construction of the MSK Pavilion, a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-certified facility aimed at enhancing access to cancer care.
Selwyn M. Vickers, MD, FACS, President and CEO of Memorial Sloan Kettering said: “We are deeply grateful to the fifth-grade students at P.S. 183 and Ms. Reis, who worked on this beautiful artwork surrounding our MSK facility.” He emphasized the importance of community involvement in building a connected and resilient environment.
Naomi Reis described her experience working with the students as enlightening: “Working with the students was eye-opening for me — getting to see the world through their perspective." She combined elements from their paintings with her abstract photos to create an imagined landscape representing their community.
Martin Woodard, Principal of P.S. 183 stated: “We are proud of the artwork our fifth-grade students created for the mural.” He highlighted how this project helps students understand their impact through art.
The initiative also received support from New York City Council Member Julie Menin who proposed the ArtBridge installation: “The Art Bridge mural reflects our shared commitment to prioritizing safety for our students at P.S. 183 and quality of life for the community.”
Valerie Mason, Chair of Community Board 8 expressed delight over the children's contribution: “Community Board 8 is delighted that the schoolchildren of P.S.183 have created beautiful artworks to be exhibited on Memorial Sloan Kettering’s construction fence.”
Stephen Pierson, Executive Director of ArtBridge added: “We are thrilled to showcase this brilliant collaboration between Naomi Kawanishi Reis and 5th graders at P.S. 183.”
