For John Michael Quattrache, a native of Staten Island, New York, the aspiration to study law was always present. The path to realizing this dream became clearer with the help of the Sr. Helen Flynn Endowed Scholarship. Currently a junior at St. John’s University majoring in Legal Studies, John recently discussed how this scholarship has impacted his academic journey and future goals.
John received the Sr. Helen Flynn Endowed Scholarship through the combined efforts of the Notre Dame College Alumnae Association and University Financial Aid. This award is given to students who exhibit both academic excellence and financial need.
“The scholarship played a major role in my decision to attend St. John’s,” John stated. “It gave me the financial support to focus on my studies and take steps toward my dream of becoming a lawyer.”
To secure this award, John submitted an essay explaining how it would aid his legal studies and underwent an interview with a panel of seven alumnae where he demonstrated his dedication and achievements.
St. John's holds personal significance for John as his mother and several relatives attended its Staten Island campus, which closed in 2024. His connection to St. John's began long before he enrolled as a student.
“When I was being interviewed for the scholarship, I truly believe my connection to St. John’s gave me an edge,” said John. “Beyond my grades, my passion for the school and my commitment to my future in law resonated with the selection committee.”
The scholarship has been transformative for John's family by providing financial flexibility as he prepares for law school. Each class in his legal studies program brings him closer to his goal.
“Without this scholarship, I don’t know if I would have been able to attend St. John’s,” admitted John. “And I truly don’t know if I would be in the position I am today.”
Looking ahead, John carries not only knowledge from St. John's but also gratitude for the scholarship that made it possible.
