The NYU Production Lab has announced the selection of six projects for its 2025 Feature Film Development Studio. This initiative is designed to support emerging artists by addressing both the artistic and commercial needs required for a market-ready script and investor package.

These projects cover a diverse range of topics, including a Minnesota teen's journey to connect with her father through demolition derby, the challenges faced by a family-run discount grocery store, and the story of a gay American man dealing with love and death alongside his traditional Muslim in-laws. Other stories include a coming-of-age narrative set in rural Texas and an anime-obsessed "hacktivist" potentially behind Bitcoin's invention.

Each project team comprises writers, producers, and directors, all including at least one current or former student from New York University's film programs. Over nine months, these teams will collaborate with NYU Production Lab staff and industry experts to refine their scripts, develop business plans and pitch materials, culminating in a live pitch session before an audience of film professionals in September.

Liz Nord, head of Programs and Creative Development at the NYU Production Lab, explained that originality and marketability were key criteria for selecting these projects. She noted that the fellowship uniquely emphasizes both artistic vision and commercial viability. "This year’s cohort exemplifies the bold, diverse storytelling that is at the heart of what we champion," Nord stated. "From intimate explorations of grief and family dynamics to sharp critiques of societal systems, these films tackle deeply resonant themes with originality and heart."

The lab has established a successful track record since its inception. Notably, Elegance Bratton participated in an earlier iteration of this program with his debut feature film The Inspection, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2022. Additionally, Tara Sheffer from last year's cohort received an Oscar nomination for her short film A Lien.

The selected 2025 projects are:

1. "Bastards of Young" - Written by Mickey Falcone; directed/produced by Kayla Marie Arend.

2. "Father & Son’s Discount Meats" - Written/directed by Robbin Rae McCulloch; written/produced by Darius Dawson.

3. "If I Die In America" - Written/directed by Ward Kamel; produced by Emily McCann Lesser.

4. "Satoshi" - Written/directed by Sara Crow; produced by David Rafailedes.

5. "Squatter" - Written/directed by Derrick Woodyard; produced by Andrew Long.

6. "Sweetwater" - Written/directed by Cassidy Batiz; produced by Natalie Novak Remplakowski.

The NYU Production Lab serves as an incubator supporting students' careers in arts and entertainment through professional development opportunities such as workshops, industry connections, career coaching, experiential learning opportunities, and fellowships across various artistic disciplines.
