CUNY Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez has issued a statement regarding Governor Kathy Hochul's executive budget proposal for the Fiscal Year 2026. The proposal aims to reinforce New York's public higher education system with a focus on affordability, modernization, and innovation.
Chancellor Matos Rodríguez highlighted several key components of the budget. "Providing free community college tuition for adults pursuing degrees in high-demand fields will not only strengthen New York’s economy but open new avenues of opportunity for underserved individuals," he stated. This initiative is part of broader commitments that include support for operating aid and academic programs such as CUNY ACE and ASAP, as well as research in artificial intelligence.
The budget also maintains funding stability for community colleges by keeping the funding floor at 100% of the prior year's levels. According to Matos Rodríguez, this ensures fiscal stability and supports these institutions as gateways to upward mobility.
Increased capital funding and investments in decarbonization are also featured in the proposal. These funds are intended to address infrastructure needs across CUNY's 25 campuses while promoting long-term climate resilience efforts.
Chancellor Matos Rodríguez expressed gratitude towards Governor Hochul, stating, "We thank Gov. Hochul for continuing to champion public higher education and look forward to working with her and legislative leaders in Albany to make our shared vision of a more inclusive and prosperous New York a reality."
