St. John’s University is urging students to participate in the National Cyber Service Academy Scholarship Program, a prestigious initiative offering free college education in exchange for public service within the US Department of Defense (DoD). As one of only 24 institutions in New York State recognized as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity (NCAE-C), St. John’s stands among seven schools in New York City participating in this program.
US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, was instrumental in establishing the scholarship program in 2022. She secured provisions allowing graduates to serve not only in the DoD but also within the US Intelligence Community.
The scholarship covers tuition costs, select books and fees, provides a stipend for room and board, funds for purchasing a laptop, and other benefits. Students can pursue studies in cybersecurity-related fields such as cyber operations and digital forensics. Recipients must commit to serving a period equivalent to their scholarship duration after graduation. The service obligation includes opportunities across both the DoD and Intelligence Community sectors.
Room and board stipends range from $25,000 annually for community college students to $34,000 per year for graduate students. To qualify, applicants need to be enrolled or accepted at an eligible institution.
Academy participants are required to serve one year per scholarship year received, up to five years total, with internships expected during academic breaks.
St. John’s University fulfills NCAE-C certification standards with its comprehensive cybersecurity curriculum designed to cater to diverse student needs and industry interests. The university's Cybersecurity Center plays a crucial role by providing multidisciplinary research opportunities and fostering collaboration within the cybersecurity community.
In 2022, St. John’s was designated as a Center of Academic Excellence (CAE) in Cybersecurity Defense by both the US Department of Homeland Security and the National Security Agency/Central Security Service through 2027.
The Bachelor of Science in Cyber Security Systems at St. John’s is accredited by ABET's Computing Accreditation Commission, preparing students for careers or further study in cybersecurity fields. Additionally, their Master of Science degree offers an immersive experience connecting students with experts and advanced resources.
