The Professional Staff Congress has announced that 90% of its members voted in favor of a new contract with the City University of New York (CUNY). The contract, covering nearly 30,000 faculty and professional staff, is set to last for almost five years, from March 1, 2023, to November 30, 2027. It includes a wage increase of 13.37% over the duration of the agreement and offers a ratification bonus up to $3,000. This deal was approved by the CUNY Board of Trustees on December 16.
CUNY Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez commented on the agreement: “Every day our talented faculty and staff members put CUNY’s mission — to provide an exceptional public higher education to anyone who seeks one — into action. This contract reflects the University’s commitment to these hardworking and dedicated individuals and will ultimately benefit CUNY’s students.”
The new contract introduces several enhancements such as title-specific lump sums and equity raises, a promotional track for full-time lecturers, an improved research award program with reassigned time pilot supporting CUNY's research mission, and continuation of a multi-year appointment pilot program for teaching adjuncts.
Teaching adjuncts are set to receive a minimum pay increase of 29.1%, bringing their compensation to $7,100 per three-credit class starting in the summer session of 2027. They will also continue receiving health insurance benefits.
Chancellor Matos Rodríguez expressed pride in expanding opportunities for professional advancement and scholarship along with financial benefits that recognize increased responsibilities: “We are especially proud to expand opportunities for professional advancement and the pursuit of scholarship...”
The parental leave program has been expanded from eight weeks to twelve weeks and now includes foster parents. Additionally, there will be an annual contribution increase of $4 million to the PSC-CUNY Welfare Fund aimed at enhancing supplemental benefits for employees.
Matos Rodríguez acknowledged key figures involved in reaching this agreement: “I am grateful to Governor Hochul and Mayor Adams for their leadership... I am also thankful to PSC President Davis... Finally, I would like to thank the members of the University leadership team...”
