Yeshiva University (YU) has announced a significant milestone in its fundraising efforts, with over $100 million raised during the 100th anniversary of its Hanukkah Dinner campaign. This achievement brings the university's major Capital Campaign to $520 million, edging closer to its target of $613 million.
The announcement was made by Rabbi Dr. Ari Berman, President of Yeshiva University, at the Centennial Hanukkah Dinner held in New York City. The event attracted more than 500 attendees and honored families that have significantly contributed to the university's 138-year history. It also highlighted the importance of scholarships for future Jewish leaders and celebrated YU's growth, including new degrees and an expanded graduate student body.
Donations have increased notably since October 7th as donors express their support for institutions committed to excellence and values. Rabbi Dr. Ari Berman stated, "Hanukkah illuminates the idea that the seeds of redemption are sown in darkness," emphasizing YU's role as a beacon of light through academic excellence and values-based education.
The dinner paid tribute to past awardees such as Albert Einstein and John F. Kennedy while raising funds for YU's development. Honorees included Chella Safra, who received an honorary doctorate for her leadership, and the Wilf Family, awarded the Centennial Medallion for their contributions to Jewish education.
Significant donations were announced during the dinner, including a surprise $36 million gift from the Wilf family. Other notable contributions included $6 million from Chella Safra and her family, $5 million from Bill Ackman, $11 million from Moshael and Zahava Straus, and $15 million from Morris Bailey and Joseph Jerome families.
Dinner Committee chairs Mitchell Julis, Daniel S. Loeb, Anita Zucker; Honorary Chairs Ingeborg and Ira Rennert; along with Honorary Co-Chairs Harry Adjmi, Shari Redstone, Terry Kassel, and Paul Singer played key roles in this successful campaign.
