Rabbi Dr. Ari Berman, President of Yeshiva University, recently led a delegation to Germany to address the issue of rising antisemitism. On December 4, he delivered the Hildesheimer Lecture at Humboldt University's School of Law in Berlin. This annual event, co-sponsored by Humboldt University and the Rabbinerseminar zu Berlin, features prominent Jewish thinkers discussing contemporary issues through academic and Jewish perspectives. Rabbi Berman's lecture, titled “Faith and Fellowship: A Historical and Legal Analysis,” focused on how medieval sages' interpretations of talmudic teachings can guide responses to current societal challenges.

Earlier, on December 2, Rabbi Berman gave the keynote address at an international conference against antisemitism hosted by the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences. In his speech, he emphasized Yeshiva University's commitment to global partnerships against hatred. “As we witness a resurgence of antisemitism, it is imperative that universities around the world rise as bastions of moral clarity,” he stated. He highlighted the importance of collaboration among academic institutions and faith communities to ensure safety for Jewish students and promote justice.

Yeshiva University is committed to championing ethical values amid increasing antisemitism worldwide. German universities play a crucial role in this effort within the European Union context, where some institutions have boycotted Israel. Strengthening alliances with international universities like Humboldt University is strategic for Yeshiva University’s mission.

The delegation included Yeshiva University undergraduate honors students who participated in meetings with German political and educational leaders. They met with Otto Fricke from the German Parliament, Former Federal Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger, Dr. Felix Klein (Federal Government Commissioner against Antisemitism), Frankfurt University President Dr. Kai-Oliver Schocke, and Vice President of Humboldt University Niels Helle-Meyer.

This visit was part of YU's focus on experiential education in leadership, preparing students for future roles in combating antisemitism and promoting moral clarity globally. The delegation's time in Germany underscored the importance of these efforts as Yeshiva University continues to build partnerships with global leaders for a brighter future.
